Feeding live Daphnia to the guppies
This is my guppy tank getting a feeding of live Daphnia straight from my Daphnia tank.
It's a simple loop:
- 1I grow green water (algae) outside.
- 2The Daphnia eat the green water. They clear it in a few days.
- 3The guppies eat the Daphnia.
Live food gets the guppies hunting, and it's great for fry and for conditioning them to breed. It costs me basically nothing once the cultures are going.
A few things I've learned:
- No filter in the Daphnia tank. Filters suck them up.
- Feed the Daphnia light. Overfeeding yeast gave me a nitrite spike.
- Strain the green water before it goes in. A guppy fry got into my Daphnia tank once.
